Once you’ve gotten rid of mice and rats in your home, you want to keep them away, but do you know how to prevent rodent re-infestation? We do. And we’re here to help.
The most effective way to keep rodents away from your home and prevent infestations is through what is known as rodent exclusion … or “rodent-proofing” your home. This includes specific measures to seal entry points into your home to keep rodents from being able to enter.
Rodent Exclusion is How to Prevent Rodent Re-Infestation
Here are three of the most important rodent exclusion methods to utilize to prevent rodent re-infestation:
1. Rescreen Crawlspace and/or Attic Vents
Install new screen over vent openings — attached either on the outside of the house or inside the crawlspace or attic — with edges securely attached to prevent rodents from squeezing through.
2. Secure Crawlspace Access
A typical crawlspace well cover — which prevents people and pets from falling into the crawlspace access well but isn’t sealed against rodents — isn’t enough. Instead, construct a secure, tightly sealed and latched door at the crawlspace entrance. Be sure to use treated lumber to prevent future issues with warping or twisting, which could create enough space for rodents to enter down the road.
3. Seal All Small Gaps and Cracks
Rodents can squeeze through incredibly small spaces, so be sure to seal all gaps and cracks with silicone caulk or foam sealant.
